The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition welcomes the Norwegian Government’s decision to pause its first licensing round for deep-sea mining. This decision marks a critical step forward in the global fight to safeguard our ocean from the unnecessary and destructive industry.
“We still have so much to learn about the deep sea and its vital role in supporting life on Earth. What we do know is that deep-sea mining risks permanent and irreversible harm to marine biodiversity and ecosystems,” said Global Campaign Lead Sofia Tsenikli. “While Norway’s decision to suspend licensing in the Arctic next year is a relief, anything short of a moratorium leaves the door open to catastrophic damage to the deep,” said Global Campaign Lead Sofia Tsenikli.
The DSCC calls on Norway to respect its commitment to ocean protection and urges the international community to unite in protecting the deep from irreversible harm by supporting a moratorium on the industry.
