“A Day for the Deep”, a global activation against deep-sea mining, – 20 July, 2025
On Sunday, the shores of Kingston, Jamaica, became a powerful stage for ocean defenders. Local surfers, divers, environmental groups, and even the President of Palau, Surangel Whipps Jr., joined forces for a paddle out protest against deep-sea mining, right at the doorstep of the International Seabed Authority.
Across 30+ paddle outs in 25 countries on 6 continents, coastal communities rose together for “A Day for the Deep”, a powerful global wave of resistance against deep-sea mining. From New Zealand to Senegal, Tonga to the Philippines, people gathered in unity, urging ISA Member States to halt deep-sea mining and protect our ocean’s most fragile depths. The message echoed loud and clear from Kingston and across the globe: the deep sea is not for plunder. It’s time for a moratorium.
