As the two-week ISA Council meeting wraps up tomorrow, Bobbi-Jo Dobush highlights the enormous scientific and regulatory gaps that remain unaddressed by the ISA. These fundamental gaps put our common heritage of humankind — the deep sea — at risk from deep-sea mining. While industry pushes to rush deliberations and begin mining, a moratorium offers a vital solution: removes pressure on States, enables the necessary scientific research and prevents disaster.

Greenpeace’s Louisa Casson provides an update from Week 2 of ISA negotiations, calling on governments to be bold and uphold opposition to deep-sea mining – especially as one company pressures the world to start mining in just months. Over 11,000 letters from concerned citizens across every continent were delivered to the ISA, opposing deep-sea mining.
