The Deep Sea Conservation Coalition (DSCC) underscores the need to protect the unique and vulnerable ecosystems of the Central Arctic Ocean, especially given the threats of climate change and the area’s untouched status. For the 2024 Central Arctic Ocean Fisheries Agreement (CAOFA), the DSCC recommends proactively identifying and safeguarding Vulnerable Marine Ecosystems (VMEs) like ridges, seamounts, and hydrothermal vents. They advocate for non-destructive sampling, comprehensive environmental impact assessments, and adherence to the precautionary approach, in line with international commitments and UN resolutions on bottom fishing.
