Seamounts are underwater mountains that rise from the deep creating oases of ocean life where migratory species including whales, sharks, turtles, seabirds and numerous fish species gather to feed, breed, rest and navigate throughout their lifecycles. These hotspots are essential for species’ survival, yet they are among the ocean’s most vulnerable habitats. Destructive fishing practices devastate fragile coral and sponge habitats, eliminate prey populations, and cause direct harm through bycatch and entanglement.
The proposed Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) Resolution and Decision (UNEP/CMS/COP15/Doc.25.3.3) on Conserving Seamount Ecosystems provides a framework for Parties to take coordinated action to protect these critical habitats across jurisdictions, safeguarding vital stepping stones for endangered migratory species and supporting international ocean conservation priorities.
