On the 12th December, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted, by consensus, the annual Sustainable Fisheries Resolution (UN Document A/79/L.38, 3 December 2024).
The resolution schedules an UNGA workshop in August 2026 to kick start a formal process by the General Assembly to review, in 2026, the implementation of the commitments in the resolution to manage deepwater fisheries on the High Seas to protect biodiversity, including seamounts, in the deep sea. The resolution further requests the UN Secretary General to produce a report on the actions taken by States and RFMOs for consideration by the 81st UN General Assembly in its review in 2026.
