The global debate surrounding deep-sea mining (DSM) presents a critical issue for Africa. While DSM promises potential short-term economic benefits for a select few, the broader environmental, ecological, social, economic and cultural implications for both current and future generations are profound and must be considered in fullness. Given Africa’s historical role in ocean governance and its commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the continent must approach DSM with caution and a long-term perspective.
