Monica Verbeek leads Seas At Risk, the Brussels-based umbrella organisation of over 35 environmental NGOs from all over Europe that promotes ambitious policies for marine protection at EU and international level. She has been an advocate for strong ocean protection since the early 1990s, when she was a campaigner for Greenpeace, Netherlands. Over her career, she has addressed a wide range of issues including marine protected areas, fisheries, deep-sea mining and other blue economy aspects. She has co-founded several coalitions and held positions in advisory bodies. She holds a PhD in biology, with her passion for all things ocean sparked by her study of narwhals in the Arctic.
